DAVID BURROWES (’cello)

David Burrowes started playing the ’cello whilst singing as a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral. He was awarded a choral scholarship to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he read Music and studied ’cello with Christopher Bunting and Moray Welsh.

Since 1985 he has been based in London. He has played as guest principal with the London Mozart Players and the City of the London Sinfonia, as well as performing extensively with the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. Since September 1998 he has held the post of Principal ’Cello in the London production of Phantom of the Opera.

He is ’cellist and Artistic Director of Cirrus, a group drawn from top London performers. The group has recorded, toured and broadcast extensively since its formation in 1992. As a member of Primavera, he has performed at the Wigmore Hall, QEH and Purcell Room, and has appeared on a number of highly acclaimed CDs with the group.

He also plays in a duo with Cirrus’s pianist Tim Carey. They recorded the current Grade 3 and 7 syllabuses for the Associated Board recently.

David is Professor of ’Cello at the University of Surrey, Head of Strings at The Kent Music Academy – the county’s specialist Saturday Music School – and Head of Music Performance at Dartford Grammar School.
